In 1975, at age 19, Jeanne Kavanagh arrived in Ste-Anne-des-Lacs (SADL) with her parents and two siblings. From the very first moment, she loved the area! Alongside her husband John and her two kids, the family has been very active with the Lac Marois Country Club and the Paroisse SADL where the kids were baptized and celebrated their first communions. Two summers ago, her daughter Emily was married on her property.
Although she practices dentistry in Laval, she became very interested in protecting the beautiful environment in SADL; she values the nature, the tranquility, the sports as well as the family and community spirit.
Originally, SADL was comprised of homes on the lakefronts and homes “situated on the other side of the street .” With the arrival of the developers and the migration of baby-boomers, the city quickly saw entire mountains of trees being cut and houses being constructed. This concerned her and so, she decided to re-institute the SADL Lake Association. This venerable Association had been responsible for the prohibition of motor boats on our lakes years ago! With a mighty team of helpers, she applied pressure on the Municipality to increase lot sizes from 30,000 square feet to 40,000 square feet thereby reducing future development by 25% in one fell swoop. The Association group became very strong and even convinced the Municipality of the importance of having a full-time environmental technician. Today, SADL boasts two full-time and one part-time technician! Numerous new regulations have been adopted, the Journée Verte was introduced and speed limits on our roads have been reduced to 40km thereby improving road security.
From Jeanne’s perspective “There is still much work to be done and the Association must continue its vigilance so that SADL may continue to be a safe haven for many generations to come”.
